What is TDEE?

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the total number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period. It includes your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) plus additional calories burned through physical activity, digestion (thermic effect of food), and non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT).

Understanding your TDEE is essential for:

  • Weight management (loss, maintenance, or gain)
  • Setting appropriate calorie targets
  • Optimizing athletic performance
  • Creating personalized nutrition plans

TDEE Calculation Methods

Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

Considered the most accurate formula for most people. Developed in 1990, it calculates BMR based on weight, height, age, and gender.

Harris-Benedict Equation

One of the earliest formulas (revised in 1984). Still widely used but may overestimate BMR by about 5% compared to the Mifflin-St Jeor equation.

Katch-McArdle Formula

Takes into account lean body mass, making it more accurate for athletic individuals with lower body fat percentages. Requires knowing your body fat percentage.

Activity Level Explained

Sedentary (multiplier: 1.2)
Office job with little or no exercise, limited standing or walking
Lightly Active (multiplier: 1.375)
Light exercise or sports 1-3 days per week, active job with standing
Moderately Active (multiplier: 1.55)
Moderate exercise or sports 3-5 days per week, physically demanding job
Very Active (multiplier: 1.725)
Hard exercise or sports 6-7 days per week, physical labor job
Extra Active (multiplier: 1.9)
Very hard daily exercise/sports and physical job or twice-daily training
