About Ideal Weight Formulas
There are several formulas used to calculate ideal weight. Each formula was developed by different researchers and may be more appropriate for different body types.
Devine Formula (1974)
Originally developed for calculating medication dosages. For men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet. For women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet.
Robinson Formula (1983)
A modification of the Devine formula. For men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg for each inch over 5 feet. For women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet.
Miller Formula (1983)
Another variation. For men: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg for each inch over 5 feet. For women: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg for each inch over 5 feet.
Hamwi Formula (1964)
One of the earliest formulas. For men: 48 kg + 2.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet. For women: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg for each inch over 5 feet.
BMI-Based Range
Based on the healthy BMI range of 18.5-24.9. This provides a range rather than a single number, acknowledging that healthy weight varies between individuals.
